March 2nd 2014 I attended a Bruce Springsteen concert.
It was a night that changed my life forever.
When the concert began, Bruce walked on-stage by himself with nothing but an acoustic guitar and harmonica.
You could sense something special was about to happen.
And it did.
At first, the crowd couldn’t pick it. There was an air of confusion as to what he was playing but then something remarkable happened ...
“I’ve never seen a diamond in the rough …” rang out and the audience was instantly mesmerised.
Then a roar went up so loud, they would’ve heard it in Wellington.
This was Lorde’s Royals.
Genius.
What a way to bond with your Kiwi fans.
Within 3 seconds he’d instantly captured and engaged his audience by performing something memorable and completely unexpected.
In May 2016, I used this exact formula to capture and engage a very large targeted audience by disrupting the Auckland Real Estate market.
I produced the unexpected.
New Zealand’s first property music video.
My wife thought I was bat-s**t crazy.
Hell, I’ll be honest … I did too.
It remained to be seen if this outside-the-box marketing would either lead to success or wiping egg from my face for months.
I needn’t have worried.
It was an industry and marketing hit.
I’d done the unthinkable by creating a marketing campaign that positioned my client’s property fair and square under the nose of my target market by leveraging the NZ media.
The marketing campaign was published by the NZ Herald, One News Now, Newshub, Seven Sharp and Newstalk ZB.
Agents throughout NZ sent messages of congrats for breaking with tradition and crafting a campaign that cut through all the marketing noise, pushing well outside the boundary of traditional Real Estate marketing.
I was on to something.
But this isn’t about me.
